Benitez looking for new management role

Monday 02 July 2012

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is said to be eyeing a return to the Premier League after two years out of management.

The Liverpool Echo have reported Benitez as saying he ready to return to the game and wants to come back to England after talks between him and Serie A side Sampdoria broke down.

Benitez said: “My idea is to find a club that match my desire, my expectations to challenge for trophies. This time (Sampdoria) was really good, I was really pleased as they were thinking of me but I am waiting for maybe another option. The priority is England but I have to be ready for any other challenge. I try to find someone that will be at the top and take on the challenge for trophies, the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League so something that you can win.”

It is understandable why Benitez wouldn’t want to return to the top Italian league after a dismal time there in 2010 – being sacked after just a few months in the job.

His time at Liverpool was decorated with trophies in the first couple of years – winning the Champions League, F.A. Cup and Super Cup - but eventually that ran dry and he left the club in 2010, making way for current England boss Roy Hodgson. Arguably his best seasons in management were with Valencia, leading them to two La Liga titles and the Uefa Cup before leaving for the Premier League and Liverpool.

The Spaniard was linked with the vacant Chelsea job before Roberto Di Matteo took over on a permanent basis.
