Di Matteo defends Chelsea tactics
Roberto Di Matteo has moved to defend criticism of the tactics that he employed last season that saw Chelsea win the FA Cup and Champions League under his guidance, insisting that the defensive mentality on display is not indicative of his approach to football, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Di Matteo took temporary charge of Chelsea from March after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked and led the club to two trophies, but the Champions League success in particular was built on the back of a sturdy defence and the rest of the side set out to contain the opposition. However, Di Matteo, who was confirmed as the new full-time Chelsea Coach at the end of the season, stressed that his usual tactics are completely different.
The Italian added that his style should not be judged only on three games - the two legs of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona and the final against Bayern Munich - but the majority of the matches for which he took charge. Di Matteo added: “My teams usually create chances and score goals, so it’s a bit unjustified to just focus on three games. We had some players out in the final against Bayern and I’ve not seen any other team play expansively against Barcelona.”
