Tottenham new boy Sigurdsson explains Liverpool snub

Thursday 05 July 2012

New Tottenham Hotspur signing Gylfi Sigurdsson has explained why he chose to join Andre Villas-Boas at Spurs rather than follow Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Iceland midfielder moved to White Hart Lane because Tottenham are a club on the up.

Sigurdsson had first been expected to make permanent the loan spell that saw him spend the latter half of the season at Swansea City, but when Swans boss Brendan Rodgers moved to Anfield is was widely thought Sigurdsson would follow suit. But Tottenham entered the fray and gazumped Liverpool, snatching the 22-year-old in an £8m transfer from Hoffenheim that was completed on Wednesday.

After signing what is thought to be a five-year contract Sigurdsson revealed he had been impressed by his meeting with the Spurs hierarchy, particularly at the club’s plans for the future and also the decision of Gareth Bale to sign a new contract with the club. Sigurdsson said: “ I was impressed with the club's plans for next season and the coming years. There is clearly great ambition at Tottenham and the club intends to do big things. It is a pleasure to see that Gareth Bale has signed a new contract.
