Man City begin Silva contract talks
Manchester City have begun talks over a new contract with their Spain international and Euro 2012 winner David Silva, ESPN has reported.
Silva has been at City since a £26m 2010 transfer from Valencia, helping Roberto Mancini’s side to an FA Cup triumph in 2011 and a first league title in more than 40 years last season. The playmaker has made 102 appearances for the Premier League champions, scoring 14 goals and creating a further 37.
A regular starter for Spain during Euro 2012 and scorer of the opening goal in the final against Italy, Silva has 18 goals in 64 games for the world and European champions. Silva was also instrumental in Spain’s Euro 2008 victory, scoring against Russia in the semi-final and picked up a World Cup winners’ medal in 2010 despite playing only rarely.
The opening of negotiations comes during a summer in which Silva has been mentioned frequently as a transfer target of Real Madrid, the champions of Spain. However, the 26-year-old has stressed he is not interested in leaving the Etihad Stadium for a return to his homeland.
