Lambert keen to re-build Aston Villa squad

By Andrew Tuft

Tuesday 10 July 2012

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is set to re-model the squad at his disposal by making a number of big decisions, including putting Alan Hutton and Stephen Warnock up for sale and dropping former No. 1 goalkeeper Shay Given, the Daily Mirror has reported. Lambert will also strive to keep England striker Darren Bent at the club.

Lambert revealed earlier this week that Bent was a vital part of his plans for the Villa Park outfit despite not having played since a season-ending ankle injury in February. But Lambert praised Bent’s goal-scoring abilities and vowed to keep him at the club.

The former Norwich City manager, who replaced Alex McLeish earlier in the summer, also revealed that he has been impressed by goalkeeper Brad Guzan. The United States international had been expected to leave the club this summer when his contract expired but instead Guzan signed a new deal under Lambert, with the 27-year-old now expected to challenge Given for the starting spot.
