Wright believes van Persie is facing awkward future at Arsenal

Monday 16 July 2012

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Robin van Persie is facing an awkward return to pre-season training with the Gunners as his contractual dispute with the club rumbles on, ESPN has reported.

Van Persie’s existing deal expires next summer and only a few weeks ago the club captain announced he would not be signing a new one, with Arsene Wenger now running the risk of losing his main striker on a free transfer in a year’s time, with the other option, if van Persie stands firm in his refusal, to sell the Netherlands international before then at a cut price.

The 28-year-old is begins training on Monday having had an extended break following his involvement with Holland in Euro 2012 and Wright feels van Persie’s teammates will not be shy about making their feelings known. Wright said: “[van Persie] will find himself in an awkward situation when he returns to training at Arsenal today. I'm sure after a few difficult conversations, the Arsenal boys will tell Van Persie they want him to stay in North London.

Wright spent seven years with Arsenal, moving from Crystal Palace in 1991 and leaving for West Ham United in 1998. In his time at the club Wright netted a record 185 goals in 289 games, a mark later surpassed by Thierry Henry.
