Liverpool and Chelsea to battle for Arsenal winger Walcott

Monday 16 July 2012

Liverpool will fight with Chelsea for the signature of Arsenal and England winger Theo Walcott as both clubs prepare a £15m offer for the Gunners star, the Daily Mail has reported.

Walcott’s contract at the Emirates Stadium is set to expire in a year’s time and the Mail notes that the former Southampton player is seeking wages of around £100,000 per week, and will leave North London if such a package is not forthcoming. Arsene Wenger is said to be keen to keep Walcott at the club but the newspaper reveals there are members of the Arsenal hierarchy who believe Walcott should be sold.

The Mail suggests that Liverpool’s move for Walcott would be financed by the sale of Andy Carroll, with the lightning-fast Walcott well-suited to the style new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is determined to impose at Anfield. But Rodgers is expected to face competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea as well as French side Paris Saint-Germain.
