Chelsea boss Di Matteo wants Premier League title
Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that after conquering Europe by winning the Champions League last season, his overriding ambition for the club is to experience success a little closer to home by winning the Premier League, the Daily Mail has reported.
Di Matteo first took charge at Stamford Bridge in March after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked. The former Chelsea midfielder guided the Blues to success in the FA Cup and the Champions League, guaranteeing Chelsea a place in this year’s competition at the expense of Spurs, ironically now coached by Villas-Boas.
The league campaign was less successful, however. When Villas-Boas was sacked Chelsea were fifth in the table and had dropped a place by the end of the season. Chelsea finished 25 points adrift of the top two, runners-up Manchester United and champions Manchester City.
Di Matteo, who was confirmed as the permanent Chelsea manager this summer, pointed to the disparity between Chelsea and City as the main target for the coming season. He said: “Manchester City have raised the bar. That is our challenge, to make up the 25-point gap in the league.
