Everton close on Pienaar return
Everton manager David Moyes has revealed the club are edging closer to securing a deal to bring midfielder Steven Pienaar back to Goodison Park, according to the Daily Mail.
The South African midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at the Merseyside club after failing to secure a starting position at Tottenham Hotspur after signing for the club in January 2011 for around £2.5m.
Just eight Premier League appearances for the North London club and a groin injury cut his Spurs career short, with then manager Harry Redknapp allowing him to return to Everton on a six-month loan deal whilst Louis Saha went in the opposite direction.
The return to Everton has rejuvenated his career and Toffees fans have taken to him warmly again, with speculation surrounding a £5m permanent return, the two clubs have been locked in talks but have not progressed any further.
Speaking after his sides 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Saturday, Moyes said: I think we are much closer to Pienaar and hopefully in time I will have something, but I don't quite have it yet.”
Having secured the international clearance of former Rangers striker Steven Naismith, Moyes is working hard to ensure he strengthens his squad for the new Premier League season and with Pienaar playing an integral part in Everton’s impressive end to the season, the 30-year-old is high on Moyes’ shopping list.
