Lucas backs Shelvey to shine for Liverpool

Tuesday 31 July 2012

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has backed teammate Jonjo Shelvey to shine this season after the 20-year-old had an impressive pre-season. Speaking in the Liverpool Daily Post, Lucas has talked up his fellow midfielder, suggesting that his age is not something that will hold him back, but rather his quality will propel him forward.

Lucas said: “Jonjo is a young player, but he’s been with us for two or three seasons so we have seen every day he has a lot of quality and I think he will be a very good player for the club. I am looking forward to helping him when he wants me to. Hopefully he will be a great addition this season.

Shelvey signed for Liverpool from Charton Athletic in 2010 and has gone on to play 37 games for the club in total, including 4 appearances in Europe. He has only scored twice but often plays a deeper role in the midfield four. He is Charlton’s youngest ever player, debuting at the tender age of 16.

Brazil international Lucas will be eagerly anticipating this season himself having not played competitive football since November after suffering a serious cruciate ligament injury against Chelsea in the League Cup.

Lucas has figured for Liverpool in three games in their preparations for the new campaign. Traditionally a defensive midfielder, Lucas has played 123 Premier League games for the Reds scoring just once.
