Chelsea close to Moses transfer

Chelsea are hopeful of completing the transfer of Wigan Athletic forward Victor Moses before this weekend’s Community Shield meeting with Premier League champions Manchester City, according to ESPN.

ESPN adds that in an effort to push through a deal Wigan chairman Dave Whelan was contacted by Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay, although Whelan still turned down the latest offer from the Champions League winners. Chelsea have made a series of bids for Moses, all of which have been rejected out of hand by Whelan.

Chelsea are now thought to be willing to meet the minimum asking price laid down by Whelan, a fee in the region of £8.5m. Whelan was originally adamant he would accept no less than £10m for the Nigeria international.

Whelan confirmed he had held discussions with Gourlay and praised Chelsea for their conduct throughout the negotiation process, adding that Chelsea were fully aware of his stance and the next step was down to them. Whelan is not expected to stand in the way of Moses if Chelsea make an acceptable offer.
