Nani considering Man Utd exit after contract talks break down

Tuesday 07 August 2012

Manchester United face the prospect of losing Portugal winger Luis Nani after the two sides reached an impasse during talks over a new contract, the Daily Mail has reported.

Nani had been expected to sign a new deal at Old Trafford this summer and was keen to do so before the start of the new Premier League season, but with the kick-off now less than two weeks away nothing has yet been agreed.

The Mail suggests that Nani was seeking assurances during the negotiations that he is a valuable member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad, but the failure to come to terms has left the 25-year-old unsure of his place in the manager’s thoughts. The newspaper adds that if United had shown greater urgency in tying down Nani to a new contract, he would not have such misgivings.

Nani is said to want to remain at United but La Liga champions Real Madrid are interested in capitalising on any stand-off between the player and his current club. Nani’s current contract has two years remaining on it so the situation is not yet at crisis point, but Nani also wants United to match his £120,000 per week wages.
