Rooney hopes to see Arsenal captain van Persie at Man Utd

Wayne Rooney has admitted he would love to see Arsenal captain Robin van Persie become his Manchester United teammate, the Daily Mail has reported, with the England striker predicting that van Persie would fit in well at Old Trafford.

Van Persie earlier this summer announced his intention not to sign a new contract with the Gunners, sparking off a three-way race for his signature between United, their near neighbours Manchester City and Serie A champions Juventus. However, it appears only United remain in the running but Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are having trouble agreeing a deal with Arsenal.

Despite that, Rooney has welcomed the prospect of van Persie signing in, commending the Netherlands forward on his form last season and confirming his admiration for the 29-year-old.

Rooney said: “He’s a player that I admire. He’s a fantastic player, he’s been amazing for Arsenal over many years.” He added: “Last season was probably his best season of all, he scored a lot of goals. If he does come here he would be a great addition to the squad.

Van Persie netted 37 goals in the last campaign while Rooney recorded a career-best 35. Together the pair were on target 72 times, scoring more goals than all but the top three teams in the Premier League last season.
