Newcastle drawn with Atromitos in Europa League

Friday 10 August 2012

Newcastle United will play Greek side Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.

The Magpies have not appeared in a European competition since 2007 and Alan Pardew will be pleased that avoided tricky teams such as Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala, and with the first leg being played away in Athens on August 23.

The Greek Super League side finished fourth last season and currently play at the Peristeri Stadium which holds just 10,200 spectators, but expect the Magpies to travel in numbers for their first foray into the Europa League since it changed its name from the UEFA Cup.

Atromitos also have little history in the competition in its current format, having last appeared in the 2006/07 season but falling short in the first round.

Pardew is likely to name a strong side for the two-legged tie, but will also be weary of potential long haul games if his side were to qualify for the group stage.
