Mikel wants Champions League repeat for Chelsea

Chelsea are lining up their most successful season yet with their sights set on retaining the Champions League and winning their fourth Premier League title, says John Obi Mikel. Reported in the Daily Telegraph, the Nigerian has been speaking ahead of this weekend’s opener and has outlined the club’s aims for the new year.

He said: “We want to defend the Champions League. We want to win the Premier League and hopefully challenge for every cup. We don’t want a repeat of last season when we slipped out of the top four but for us the top four is not the target. The most important thing is to regain the trophy.

Whilst it is no surprise the Blues’ have the ambition to keep the title of Champions League holders, it is worth nothing that no team has ever completed a back to back win in the Champions League format - the old set up of the European Cup saw a number of consecutive wins including five victories in a row from Real Madrid.

Mikel continued, this time reflecting on Chelsea’s poor turnout in the league last year. He said: “It hurts us that it was such a big gap (25 points) last season. We spoke about it and we don’t want that to repeat itself. We want to compete with them (Manchester City and Manchester United).

Chelsea’s league position in the last campaign was their worst since Roman Abramovich bought the club. The Russian responded by replacing Andre Villas-Boas with Roberto Di Matteo, who helped the club to two successful cup runs but was unable to alter their league form. The Italian will no doubt be hoping to get off to a good start this weekend when he takes his team to Wigan on Sunday.
