Liverpool target Dempsey fined after refusing to play for Fulham

Saturday 18 August 2012

Clint Dempsey, the Fulham midfielder wanted by Liverpool, has been fined by the club after he refused to be selected in the Cottagers side to play Norwich City on the opening day of the Premier League season, the Daily Mirror has reported.

The Mirror claims Dempsey has effectively gone on strike in an effort to force through his move to Anfield. The United States international was subsequently fined a week’s wages - £25,000 - for his actions. Fulham manager Martin Jol described the situation as “sad and embarrassing”.

Earlier in the summer the website of Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, posted a story claiming to have signed Dempsey. The piece was hastily taken down but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted to an interest in the 29-year-old, while Jol felt Liverpool and Dempsey had both been disrespectful towards Fulham over the matter.

Even (Rodgers) told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it’s almost embarrassing,” Jol said. The manager added that Fulham will sell Dempsey but warned Liverpool should not expect to sign the player for anything less than his full value.
