Ramirez set for surprise Southampton move

By Andrew Tuft

Saturday 18 August 2012

Gaston Ramirez, the Bologna and Uruguay midfielder previously linked with a host of Premier League teams, is set for a surprise move to newly-promoted Southampton, the BBC has reported.

Ramirez himself said as much in the Italian Press on Friday and Saints manager Nigel Adkins welcomed the prospect of the 21-year-old signing for the club. A fee of £11.8m has been mooted, which would represent the most Southampton have ever paid for a player and be the second time the club have broken their transfer record this summer alone, having previously paid £7m for Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez.

The president of Bologna, Albano Guaraldi, has however insisted he still has to sign off on the deal before any transfer can go ahead, warning that if the specifics of the move do not satisfy him then there is no chance it will be completed.

Adkins however praised the ambition of his own chairman, Nicola Cortese, in attempting to seal such a coup, while stressing it was still important the deal make financial sense to Southampton after their recent experiences of administration.
