Man Utd striker Berbatov linked with Fiorentina move

By Andrew Tuft

Wednesday 22 August 2012

Dimitar Berbatov could be set to end his Manchester United career with a move to Serie A side Fiorentina, the Daily Mirror has reported. The signing of Robin van Persie pushed the Bulgarian further down the pecking order while Berbatov has spoken directly with Sir Alex Ferguson to ask to leave the club.

The newspaper adds that the conversation between Berbatov and Ferguson took place on Friday, with the manager allowing Berbatov and his camp to speak with the Italian side about a £3m move. That figure would represent a tenth of the sum United paid Tottenham Hotspur for Berbatov in 2008.

Sunderland have also been mentioned in connection with the 31-year-old, who two seasons ago finished as United’s top scorer. However, the presence of both Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, one of whom was usually selected to partner Wayne Rooney last season, saw Berbatov moved to the fringes of the squad, something the van Persie signing was only ever going to exacerbate.
