Man Utd to beat Liverpool to Mexico midfielder Herrera

Manchester United are facing competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool in their pursuit of Mexico international midfielder Hector Herrera, who starred for his country at the London Olympics, the Daily Mail has reported.

The 22-year-old is valued by his current club, Pachuca, at around £10m but is attracting interest from both United and Liverpool. Pachuca sporting director Andres Fassi announced recently that United had made an approach for Herrera, having first identified the player over a year ago - long before he won a Gold medal at this summer’s Olympic Games.

The Mail suggests Herrera would be a replacement for Lucas Moura in the plans of Sir Alex Ferguson, after Paris Saint-Germain beat United to the signing of the Brazil international. In what could be a busy last week and a half of the transfer window at Old Trafford, the Mail is also claiming United will wrap up the signing of Chilean teenager Angelo Henriquez, and are considering a loan deal for Milan defender Phillipe Mexes in order to ease their defensive injury crisis.
