Arsenal winger Gervinho targets trophies

Arsenal’s squad have a core belief that they can challenge for and win trophies this season - according to Gervinho. Reported in the Daily Mail, the Ivory Coast winger has been speaking about his side’s chances this season, boasting a new found confidence within the Emirates dressing room.

He said: “There’s a great belief that we can contend for trophies. This is important not only for the players, but also for the club in general. There is real hope that we can bring trophies to Arsenal. Every player is conscious of this and we’re going to do all we can to achieve it this season.

Gervinho signed for Arsenal last summer and experienced a rollercoaster of a first season. On his debut he was sent off for hitting Joey Barton in the face and when he scored his first goal it came in a loss to Blackburn. But despite this turbulent start he went on to play 25 games and scored four goals, his wing play contributing largely to Robin van Persie’s 30-goal season.

The Ivorian continued by praising the club’s newcomers. He added: “We’ve had a few changes at the club and there’s a good spirit among the group - we’re all enjoying playing together. Everyone is happy and it goes without saying that the group is up for having a good season… These new signings will help us move on and I think they are a good set of strikers.

Arsenal drew 0-0 with Sunderland in their opener at the weekend and they will be looking to improve on that result with an away trip to Stoke on Sunday.
