Man City fail in bid for Chelsea defender Luiz

Thursday 23 August 2012

Premier League champions Manchester City have made an offer for Chelsea defender David Luiz, the Daily Mail has claimed, with the Manchester Evening News adding the bid was rejected by the Champions League winners.

The Mail adds that Roberto Mancini moved for the Brazil international after missing out on Liverpool’s Daniel Agger, with Mancini in need of additions in defence after Micah Richards was ruled out of action for more than two months. Mancini saw a series of offers for Agger turned down and appears to be in line for a similar fate regarding Luiz.

A fee of £30m was reportedly offered to Chelsea for Luiz - £6m more than the London side paid Benfica for the player in 2010. Luiz missed Chelsea’s midweek win over Reading with a knee injury although the Mail quotes the Sun in saying Luiz was actually absent because of talks over a move to the Etihad Stadium.
