Wenger denies Arsenal interest in Drogba

Arsene Wenger has rejected the idea that Arsenal are interested in signing former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who the Daily Mail report is having an unhappy time at Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Drogba moved to Shanghai on a free transfer after leaving Stamford Bridge over the summer. The Ivory Coast international’s last act on the football field for Chelsea was to convert the decisive penalty in the Champions League final shootout against Bayern Munich, having already scored the equalising goal that took the game to extra time.

It was Drogba’s 157th and final goal for the side he joined from Marseille in 2004. Drogba made 342 appearances for the club, winning the Premier League three times, the FA Cup four times, the League Cup twice and the Champions League.

But a power struggle at Shenhua is understood to be casting doubt over Drogba’s future at the club, as the club’s main financier has threatened to withdraw his funding if certain demands are not met.

That has led to suggestions Drogba could be looking to leave, but Wenger insists if he does, he will not end up at the Emirates Stadium. He said: “At the moment no. In my opinion he is not free. He has just left England. I don’t know about the situation because he came out with a completely different statement.

You hear he might go to Real Madrid - but then he says ‘I am staying in China.’ Is it just because he wants to be paid off? I don’t know.
