Ferguson upset at Man Utd penalty miss

By Andrew Tuft

Thursday 20 September 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has criticised his Manchester United players for missing a penalty in the narrow Champions League win over Galatasaray on Wednesday, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Luis Nani missed the second-half penalty when his tame effort was saved by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, with Ferguson after the match questioning why the Portugal winger took the spot kick rather than Robin van Persie.

It was United’s third penalty miss of the campaign - already as many as they recorded last season - after van Persie missed against Southampton and Javier Hernandez did likewise against Wigan Athletic last weekend.

Ferguson claimed that by missing from 12 yards, United kept Galatasaray in the game, with the Turkish side hitting the crossbar, having a penalty appeal of their own rejected and going close on a number of occasions.

The manager added: “We missed so many chances in the second-half, that was the worrying part. Missing the penalty just after half-time keeps them in the game. If it goes 2-0 at that stage, it would have been very difficult for them to get back.

Ferguson also took responsibility for not pre-arranging who is United’s designated penalty taker, claiming he wanted van Persie to step up rather than Nani, insisting that he should have made his preference clear before the game.
