Lazio boss wants Gascoigne to attend Tottenham clash

Thursday 20 September 2012

Lazio manager Vladimir Petkovic has spoken of his hope that Paul Gascoigne can be part of the Stadio Olimpico crowd on November 22 for his team’s reverse clash with Tottenham in the Europa League.

According to the the Daily Mail Gascoigne, who enjoyed spells at both Lazio and Tottenham in his turbulent career, turned down the chance to attend Thursday’s clash between the two clubs at White Hart Lane due to personal problems. Gascoigne, 45, has had well documented problems with alcohol, domestic violence, drugs and his psychological health since his career came to an end in 2004.

Indeed, Lazio manager Petkovic spoke of his concern at the well-being of the player who endeared himself to the Lazio fans with an 89th minute equaliser against bitter local rivals Roma.

I followed Gascoigne when he was at Lazio and I know he was an idol to the fans so I am very sorry that he won’t be there and that he is having these problems at the moment,” said Petkovic.

I certainly hope that withe the inner strength that he undoubtedly has, he will be able to recover and that he will be in Rome for the second leg.

Petkovic’s Lazio side have not dropped a point after three games of the Serie A season and approach the European clash at White Hart Lane in high spirits. Tottenham will be similarly buoyed after last Sunday’s first win under new manager Andre Villas-Boas at Reading.
