Man City boss Mancini tips Arsenal for title challenge

By Andrew Tuft

Saturday 22 September 2012

Roberto Mancini believes Arsenal will be one of the threats Manchester City have to see off in order to retain their Premier League title, ESPN has reported.

The two sides meet on Sunday and go into the fixture level on points, with the Gunners sitting in third to City’s fourth by virtue of goal difference. Both have made unbeaten starts to the league campaign but endured contrasting fortunes in the Champions League in midweek, Arsenal coming from behind to beat Ligue 1 champions Montpellier, while City twice gave up the lead before losing 3-2 against La Liga champions Real Madrid.

ESPN claims Arsenal were not expected to be among the front-runners this season after selling both striker and captain Robin van Persie, and midfielder Alex Song. Mancini however believes that even with the departure of the influential pair, Arsenal are a stronger proposition today than 12 months ago thanks to the signings made by his opposite number Arsene Wenger.

Mancini said: “Arsenal can compete for the title this season. They are better than last season, even if they lost some good players. Maybe, because of that, there is less pressure on them this season. They lost van Persie and Song, but the players they have brought in have experience and quality.
