Arsenal news - Gunners set for record profits, Wenger to expose violence, Walcott set for return

By James McLean

Friday 24 September 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Arsenal. Today:

Walcott set for return.

Theo Walcott is set to return to training with Arsenal this week after a month’s absence due to an ankle injury, according to The Sun. The 21-year-old sustained the injury while on international duty in England’s victory in Switzerland earlier this month, and his return looks set to offer some light relief to the Gunners’ injury woes. He is not expected to be fit for the trip to Stamford Bridge, however, and his next competitive match looks set to be for England at Wembley against Montenegro on October 12.

Wenger wants to expose violence.

Arsene Wenger has said he should be allowed to condemn violent football. The Frenchman has been involved in a verbal tussle with Stoke and Blackburn managers Tony Pulis and Sam Allardyce over comments made about their clubs’ physical approach to their matches, and the criticism was met with anger in both parties. Speaking to The Telegraph, Wenger said: “Most of the time it was down to the fact I criticised violent football, and I am ready to do that at any price, to come out on that because I don't accept it. When I say 'this is a bad foul', I just say 'this is a bad foul'. I do not consider who it is, where it is or the manager. I just think it is a bad foul. They [Allardyce and Pulis] shouldn't take it personally because I do not criticise them.”

Gunners set for record profits.

Arsenal look set to announce record profits that will leave “many rival Premier League clubs green with envy,” according to Mirror Football. With such an improvement in financial circumstances at the club, they are also expected to declare that debts on their Highbury Square development have been repaid six months early. The club are expected to earn approximately a £30m windfall from the sale of 90 apartments on the development, and the cost of the purchase of the Emirates is “comfortably covered by income.” While this is good news for the future financial security of the Gunners, some fans are likely to question just why Arsene Wenger’s frugal bookkeeping has not to date resulted in a substantial strengthening of the squad.
