Arsenal news - Gunners chase Ogbonna, Wenger won't risk Fabregas, Wilshere in two England teams

By James McLean

Friday 01 October 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Arsenal. Today:

Wenger won't risk Fabregas.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has issued a fitness deadline to crocked skipper Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard had hoped to be fit for this weekend’s six-pointer with Chelsea, but Wenger is only too aware of the risks of rushing a star player back from injury after Fabregas aggravated a hamstring injury last season when being brought back too early. The 23-year-old is likely to declare himself fit before the deadline, but Wenger will leave it until Saturday morning before assessing the likelihood of Fabregas featuring on Sunday. Speaking to The Telegraph, Wenger said: “It looks a 50:50 but a 50:50 balancing on the negative side.” Should Fabregas fail to regain full fitness in time, he is likely to be replaced in the playmaker role by Frenchman Samir Nasri.

Gunners chase Ogbonna.

Following Wednesday’s news of Arsenal’s interest in 6ft 3in centre-back Siyanda Xulu, the Gunners are now thought to be after Angelo Ogbonna, the Italy U-21 defender who stands at the same height. The First Post reports that his present club Torino have said they are willing to do business for his signature – but are unlikely to accept anything below the £6.5m mark. Everton made a bid in vain for the player this summer, but Arsene Wenger looks to be the next to make his move for the 22-year-old, who also qualifies for Nigeria due to his parentage. Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reports the Reds are also keeping tabs on versatile 20-year-old midfielder Kara Mbodj of Tromso, who is a graduate of Patrick Vieira’s Diambars Academy in Senegal.

Jack Wilshere looks set for double England duty later in the month, according to The Sun. The 18-year-old has been named in Stuart Pearce’s U-21 squad for the European Championship playoff with Romania on October 8, with the return leg on October 12. However, senior coach Fabio Capello looks set to name him in his senior squad as well for the Euro 2012 qualifier at Wembley against Montenegro which is also on October 12. With the senior call up taking priority, the Arsenal starlet appears likely to play for two different England teams in four days. Newcastle striker and reported Arsenal target Andy Carroll also looks to be ready to receive his first senior call up after being left out of the U-21 selection.
