Arsenal news - Drogba nearly joined Arsenal, Clichy happy to win ugly, Capello to bend rules for Walcott?

By James McLean

Saturday 02 October 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Arsenal. Today:

Capello to bend rules for Walcott?

Theo Walcott could be set to tempt England Coach Fabio Capello to break his selection policy ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro at Wembley on October 12. The Daily Mail reports that Capello usually refuses to select players who were unfit to play their last club match prior to selection – and the 21-year-old will not be fit for Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea this weekend, just one day before the Italian announces his selection. However, with the squad being announced so far in advance on this occasion it is felt the 64-year-old may bend the rules to allow for Walcott’s inclusion.

Clichy happy to win ugly.

Arsenal defender Gael Clichy has said that he loves Arsenal’s attractive style of football - but would drop it in an instant if it meant silverware would arrive at the Emirates. According to a report on Just Arsenal, the 25-year-old said: “At some point you have to ask yourself a question – do you want to be the team that’s playing the great football or do you want to be the team that’s winning silverware. We want to try and do both but that is very difficult. We are the new generation and up to this point we haven’t won anything. Is that good enough? I don’t think so, and that’s why I’d be ready to win silverware ugly rather than play amazing football and win nothing.”

Drogba nearly joined Arsenal.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has revealed he could have joined Arsenal prior to moving to Stamford Bridge. The Ivorian – who earlier this week revealed Arsenal were his “favourite club” – has proved to be a real thorn in Arsene Wenger’s side since moving to England, netting 12 goals in 12 games against the Gunners. Drogba told Sky Sports: “Arsenal was a team with a lot of French players and players from the French League. Sylvain Wiltord, Patrick Vieira,? Thierry Henry, Robert Pires - the French used to joke Arsenal were the 21st team in Ligue 1. And then I heard Arsene Wenger was interested in me. But for some reason it didn't happen and I didn't sign for Arsenal.” Speaking of his impressive record against the north Londoners, he said: “I am looking forward to it and will try my best to keep that record going but I know it won't be easy.”
