Arsenal news - Wenger: No big money deals for 20 years, Chamakh wants revenge, Team news

By James McLean

Sunday 03 October 2010

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Arsenal. Today:

Wenger: No big money deals for 20 years.

Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal fans not to expect any big transfers for the next 20 years, according to a report on the Mail Online. The Frenchman has helped establish the Gunners as one of the most financially sound clubs in Europe largely due to his preference to blood new talent as opposed to spending big on quick fixes, but due to the club’s ground move – which has saddled them with a “mortgage” not due for full repayment until 2031 - as well as a wage bill which has already topped £110m at the end of last season, the manager does not see a way out to spend big for the next two decades despite healthy profits in other avenues. He said: “Yes, the wage bill approach will stay the same until the stadium is paid off, but when it is we can go a bit higher. We can never be dominant in the transfer market because it is never just the money you spend to buy players, it is the wages as well.”

Team news.

Imscouting.com is reporting that captain Cesc Fabregas will not to be fit to participate in the crunch clash with Chelsea this afternoon. The Spaniard had initially set the match as his target date to return from hamstring trouble suffered in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland, but his hopes appear to have been dashed after manager Arsene Wenger categorically ruled out his selection, as well as that of under-fire goalkeeper Manuel Almunia. Kieran Gibbs has also joined the pair on the injury table with a calf problem, and according to talkSPORT defender Thomas Vermaelen will also be absent, though his Achilles injury will not require surgery.

Chamakh wants revenge.

Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh has told The Daily Star that he hopes to make England defender John Terry’s life hell at Stamford Bridge this afternoon. The Moroccan had a nightmare last time he faced the Blues in the Champions League last season, while he was still with French outfit Bordeaux. He said: “With Bordeaux it was a bad experience, a bad memory. Not necessarily against Terry but against Chelsea. We lost 4-0 and at Bordeaux we had a 1-1 draw. I was impressed with their speed, the pace of the game and this was a team that had specifically trained to win the Champions League. They were stronger and more aggressive – but now at Arsenal we are equals.”
