Chelsea news - Blues chase Luiz, Terry out for months, Alex out

By James McLean

Wednesday 17 November 2010

Alex out.

Bad news for Chelsea fans – defender Alex has been ruled out for a full “six to eight weeks” to add to the Blues’ defensive woes this season. The 28-year-old looks set to undergo arthroscopic surgery to investigate the cause of the pain in his right knee which has kept him from competing in the champions’ last two matches already.

He has also withdrawn from the Brazil squad for the clash with Argentina in Qatar this week, according to The Telegraph.

He joins John Terry among others on the injury table, and it looks as though Chelsea may need to dip their toes into the transfer market to obtain some cover.

Blues chase Luiz.

Their prime target looks set to be Benfica defender David Luiz, who has previously been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in past transfer windows. With the injuries to Alex and John Terry, Chelsea are left with only Branislav Ivanovic as a trusted central defensive option, and even he is only a single booking away from suspension, meaning Chelsea need a reliable option to plug the gaps at the back.

According to Mirror Football, Luiz fits the mould. Benfica have previously refused to sell the player in the past, but with them looking to rebuild their squad in the summer a cool £25m for Luiz’s services could be a deal to suit all parties involved according to The Telegraph.

Terry out for months.

John Terry, meanwhile, has told the club that he will “go anywhere” in order to solve his long-term nerve problem. The issue has ruled the England star out for “months and months” according to boss Carlo Ancelotti, but it is thought that the Blues will leave no stone unturned in their search for an answer to the problems plaguing the captain at the moment.

According to Yahoo! Eurosport, Terry said: “Basically, I am trying whatever is suggested. I'm at my wits' end. I know I won't play on Saturday against Birmingham, but beyond that there are no clues. It could be weeks, it could be months. Everybody is coming up with different names and I have said I will go anywhere if someone can solve the problem.”
