Arsenal news - Henry returns, Almunia to Turkey, Bendtner up for the cup

By James McLean

Tuesday 11 January 2011

Henry returns.

Thierry Henry has returned to north London in order to train with former club Arsenal during the MLS off-season, according to BBC Sport.

The Frenchman became a legend at the club during his eight years with the Gunners before departing for Barcelona in 2007. He joined New York Red Bulls last summer, but has been spending time at his home in London since the season ended in November.

A statement on arsenal.com said: “Thierry Henry is back at Arsenal. The short-term arrangement will help Henry maintain his fitness of the new MLS campaign, which begins in March.”

EatSleepSport reports that chairman Peter Hill-Wood has confirmed that the France international will not be re-signing on a loan basis however, saying: “We won't be signing him. David Beckham was down with us last year and Arsene is very happy to have our old players come back in.”

Bendtner up for the cup.

Nicklas Bendtner has revealed his belief that Carling Cup success would not only end the Gunners’ five year trophy drought, but could also be a springboard to Premier League success this season.

The Gunners are favourites to lift the trophy, and have been presented with a good chance of making the Final after being drawn in the semi-final against Championship outfit Ipswich Town.

According to Clubcall, Bendtner said: “For me, we have to get to the final of the Carling Cup. It would be fantastic to win a trophy early on in the season and have something to show for our work already.

“Last season, Manchester United won it and went on to take the Premier League too. Let's hope we can do the same.”

Almunia to Turkey.

EatSleepSport believes than Galatasaray look set to come calling for Gunners goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, who is heavily rumoured to be on his way out of the north London club.

A move back to his native Spain was the 33-year-old’s preferred move, and with reported interest from Malaga and Atletico Madrid it appeared he would get his wish.

However, no concrete offer has been received, but the Turkish giants are unlikely to be put off by the £1.5m price tag.

Almunia began the season as Arsene Wenger’s first choice stopper, but has since dropped down the pecking order to third following the good performances of Lukasz Fabianski and Wojciech Szczesny.
