Jol pins Dutch hopes on Robben
Fulham boss Martin Jol believes that Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is the man that Holland fans have to pin their hopes, if they want to recover from their disappointing Euro 2012.
The Oranje failed to register a single point in their group, despite being tipped as pre-tournament favourites, and many media outlets have criticised the Dutch attack for their failure to produce. Robben has suffered dual heartbreak this season, with Bayern losing the Champions League final, but Jol believes that the former Chelsea winger is the best international player since Johan Cruyff.
Jol said: “I feel that he is our best player, so I hope that he will recover from this disappointment and that he will be strong enough to show the world that he is probably one of the best players in the world.”
Robben was booed by Bayern Munich fans a few days after the Champions League final, a game in which he missed a penalty in normal time, when he played in a friendly for Holland. Jol believes that the action of the Munich fans was ‘unforgivable’ and they should have respect for a player who could have left the club, but decided to extend his contract and remain committed.
