Chelsea to wait until after Champions League final to name new manager
Chelsea are in no rush to appoint a permanent manager as a senior executive at the club insists that a decision over the future of interim coach Roberto Di Matteo will be made after the Champions League final, the BBC has reported.
Chief executive Ron Gourlay added that the plan was always to examine the situation at the end of the season, and despite Di Matteo successfully extending the season beyond the 38th Premier League game and into May 19’s Champions League final, the club was not going to change course.
Gourlay also said that Di Matteo had not pushed the Chelsea hierarchy to make an early decision, nor did he expect the Italian to do so. Gourlay continued: “The club said from day one when he came in as interim manager that we would assess things at the end of the season. Robbie is completely on board with that.”
Since Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas in the Stamford Bridge dugout in March, he has guided Chelsea to 12 wins and four draws in 19 games, losing only three. Those wins include an FA Cup final victory over Liverpool and a home triumph against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, with one of the four draws coming in the return leg in the Nou Camp to seal Chelsea’s place in the final against Bayern Munich.
