Hill-Wood wary of Van Persie demands

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has admitted the club could lose Robin van Persie, if the striker demands excessive wages when he meets with the Gunners to discuss his future, ESPN Soccernet reports.

The 28 year old is currently on international duty with Holland, suffering a bad result in a 1-0 loss to Denmark in the opening game of Euro 2012, and will not discuss his future with the club until he returns from the tournament. Talks were held before Van Persie flew to the Euros, but no resolution was met and Hill-Wood is completely in the dark over whether his captain will stay or go.

Manchester City have been linked with a move for the Dutchman, but Van Persie’s father has ruled out a move to Eastlands and insists his son holds Arsenal fondly in his heart, so moving to another Premier League club is not an option. Hill-Wood will be hoping to keep hold of Van Persie, as the club look to push on from their third-placed finish last season.

Hill-Wood said: “He (Robin) is vital to us and has been an extremely good captain. But if somebody comes along and offers Robin £250,000 a week, then I am afraid we cannot compete with that. Hopefully, we can reach agreement with Robin and ideally he will extend his contract. I just hope that Robin will be with us next season, because I genuinely feel we can make a real challenge for the Premier League”.
