Holland vs Germany - Match preview and prediction

One of the most highly anticipated match of this summer’s European Championship gets underway this evening, with Holland and Germany both looking to push on with the former desperate to leave behind a faltering start.

Holland suffered a disappointing loss against Denmark on Saturday which has left them with a difficult task to qualify from the ‘group of death’, Group B. A win against their fierce rivals Germany would give them a much needed push, and would help them live up to their position as one of the favourites for the title within the media.

The World Cup 2010 finalists registered 28 goal attempts in their match against Denmark, with the prolific Robin van Persie largely ineffective in-front of goal; there have been calls to replace him with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijik knows anything but a victory will severely hamper his side’s chances of passing through to the quarter-final stages of the competition, although he will be boosted by defender Joris Mathijsen’s return from injury.

German national coach Joachim Loew has no injury concerns ahead of the game against the Dutch, though the main decision is whether he is to start with Mario Gomez or pick Miroslav Klose up-front. Gomez struggled to get involved in the game with Portugal, but scored the only goal – it is thought that Klose is the preferred striking option for the Holland clash.

Despite winning their first game against Portugal, Loew has insisted his side can get even better as the tournament progressing saying: "The important thing was to win. The European Championship is like a Formula One race but without a warm-up."

Should Germany pick up a win against Holland then they will secure their passage to the next phase, whilst Holland will hope to take the qualification into the last round of games.
