Chelsea trailing Modric as Madrid interest wanes

Luka Modric remains a target for Champions League winners Chelsea but interest in the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder from Real Madrid has lessened over the last week, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The newspaper adds that Tottenham are prepared for Modric to leave this summer but chairman Daniel Levy will not let the 26-year-old leave for anything less than what he believes is his full value. The Telegraph claims Spurs will not accept less than £50m for the Croatia international.

Chelsea were dogged pursuers of Modric a year ago, having a series of bids rejected by Levy, with the Telegraph revealing both that one such offer was turned down shortly before the close of the summer transfer window, and that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich vowed to Modric that he would pick up his interest again this summer.

Madrid’s interest in Modric is said to have declined after Nuri Sahin, the Turkey midfielder, refused to be included in any offer as a makeweight. Manchester United are also believed to maintain interest in Modric.

modric will be a good buy for chelsea, but i think the 50 million pounds is just too big to sign him

By Denis on 30 June 2012 at 06:05

I think chelsea, is a club that misuses the money to get fame by signing player on high rates, and there after they give them free transfer coz no one can meet the buy price, i suggest that they can sign cheap talented players like arsenal.

Instead of buying Luka Modric they should try for Moutinho. He is a far better player then Modric and would not cost much

With news of AVB closing in on the Spurs job and the increasing desire of sturridge to play in his preferrd position - as a central striker - which he may not get @chelsea, it'd make sense if chelsea cld made a cash + player(sturridge) offer to tottenham for Modric... This offer equals d required £50million transfer fee. Considering the benefits of this offer if accepted, it'll present sturridge with what he'd always wanted - playing the striking role -since Jermain De Foe is d only outright striker presently @white hart lane. Also, it'l provide an avenue for sturridge to link up with the man who had much faith in him to deliver. Modric is "Pirlo-like" and He'l add value to any team he plays in. We really need Modric @chelsea. GO CHELSEA

If our Club is releasing Sturridge I buy the idea, it's a development in a positive direction. Let's keep close watch on Luka Modric if works out he can help likes of Mikel, Frank etc in midfield and with other new signings we can rule Europe again. Up Up Up Blues, Up Chelsea, together we stand. Come on we are the Champions!

Swap sturridge and 20 million for modric would be a good deal

Modric is worth having at chelsea, we should go for him. No matter the price.

Spurs is making it difficult for Modric to move. £50m is much on the high side. I feel sorry for him.
