Arsenal cancel Nigeria friendly

Friday 06 July 2012

Arsenal have pulled out of a scheduled friendly with the Nigeria national team and will instead aim to visit the country next summer, the BBC has reported.

The reason for the cancellation was given as “complexities linked to the planned game,” with an Arsenal employee adding that the club was not satisfied with all of the arrangements for the fixture. The match was due to take place in Abuja on August 5. The friendly would have been the Gunners’ first visit to the West African nation, and first trip to Africa at all since a pre-season friendly in South Africa in 1993.

Arsenal’s remaining pre-season excursions will see them take in a series of matches across Asia, with dates in China and Malaysia, including a friendly against Premier League rivals Manchester City. Arsenal are travelling the globe this summer after cancelling their annual Emirates Cup tournament because of a clash with the London Olympics.
