Schalke end interest in Tottenham’s van der Vaart but Hamburg remain keen

Wednesday 11 July 2012

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart will not be joining Schalke 04 this summer after the German club ended their interest in the playmaker, but Schalke’s Bundesliga rivals and van der Vaart’s former employers Hamburg remain keen on the Netherlands international, the Guardian has reported.

The Guardian adds that van der Vaart does not fit into the plans of the new Spurs Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas, and that rumours of a return to Germany have persisted throughout the summer. The Schalke manager, Huub Stevens, had confirmed he wanted to add van der Vaart to his squad but the club’s CEO, Clemens Tonnies, revealed the deal was not going to go through after financial terms could not be agreed.

Schalke’s decision not to pursue van der Vaart then clears the way for Hamburg to try and re-sign their former star. Van der Vaart played for the club between 2005 and 2008, leaving for Real Madrid, and the newspaper notes van der Vaart remains popular amongst the fans. The Guardian also confirms that while Hamburg would struggle to meet van der Vaart’s monetary demands, they do have an investor who could help make up the shortfall.
