Ferdinand charged for Cole Twitter comments

The Football Association have charged Rio Ferdinand in relation to comments he made on Twitter regarding Ashley Cole after he gave evidence in court earlier this month.

The BBC are reporting that the FA have issued an improper conduct charge to the Manchester United defender after he used the term ‘choc ice’ when discussing the Chelsea left back.

The tweet came amid the court hearing concerning Rio’s brother Anton and Chelsea captain John Terry who was been tried for using racially charged language in a heated exchange with the QPR player last October – the defender being found not guilty by the court.

The initial use of the term ‘choc ice’ was not made by the 33-year-old centre back but he did repeat it causing a storm and several complaints from Twitter users – the defence being that he was not using it in reference to Cole’s race but as colloquial, slang term to mean 'fake'.

The FA this week have made it clear with a new set of guidelines that what players say on social media will be taken seriously and charges will be issued if they are considered to be offensive or, as Ferdinand has found out, felt to be improper conduct.
