Mertesacker impressed by Arsenal transfer business
Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker has revealed he has been impressed by the moves the club has made in the summer transfer market, the Daily Mirror has reported. Arsene Wenger has thus far signed striker Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, as well as Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla and has kept hold of captain Robin van Persie.
The Germany international believes the new arrivals will help the Gunners to a better season than that of last year, when Arsenal were for a long time trailing Tottenham Hotspur in the battle to finish third. Arsenal eventually recovered to beat their near neighbours to what proved to be the final qualification spot for the Champions League following Chelsea’s victory in the competition.
Mertesacker joined Arsenal a year ago, signing from Werder Bremen late in the transfer window. The defender made 26 appearances for Arsenal last season until his campaign was ended early, in February, by an ankle injury that required surgery.
“I think we have a better situation than last year. The team is full of characters, good players and every position has competition,” Mertesacker said, adding: “I'm looking forward to the season because I think we can show the potential we have in a better way than last year.”
