Downing impressed by new Liverpool boss Rodgers
Stewart Downing thinks very highly of his new manager, Brendan Rodgers, and feels the new style being introduced at Anfield suits him down to the ground. Reported by the Daily Mirror, Downing has been speaking about the summer under Rodgers and how pre-season and the club’s early Europa Leagues fixtures have set Liverpool up for the new season
He said: “It’s still early days. The manager is trying to put his ideas into the team and we’ve obviously only played together a couple of times, so there are no targets yet. But I like his style and the way he wants us to play. Hopefully it works because he’s a good manager, the players all like him and his methods and training are really good.”
The new set-up seems to have worked so far for the 28-year-old after he opened his account for the new season in Liverpool’s first Europa League tie away to FC Gomel two weeks ago.
Downing struggled to get off to a positive start in his first year with the Reds but this time around he has managed to get out of the blocks quickly and make a big impact.
He added: “So far it’s been good for us and I think people could see from our Europa League qualifier against FC Gomel the other night that we’re playing further up the field. That’s what the manager wants and that’s good for me because I like to play out wide and attack.”
Downing and co kick off their new campaign away to West Brom on Saturday and will be hoping to get off to a positive start as they look to dispel the demons from last season in which the Merseyside team had their worst league finish in 18 years.
