The Villa defence looked extremely poor towards the end of last season after a series of unfortunate injuries to defender Martin Laursen cost them a top four finish. Laursen’s defensive ability as well as his presence will be sorely missed in the Villa squad and the selling of Zat Knight – the tallest defender in the Premier League – has not helped O’Neill’s defensive problem.
