The poor run of form for Les Gones has seen them fall off the pace set by Les Girondins and Sunday’s late encounter inflicted more misery on a faltering Lyon side. Marouane Chamakh scored a decisive header late in the game to give Bordeaux all three points and move eight points clear of their biggest rivals. In a game of few chances Chamakh rose highest to convert Yoann Gourcuff’s cross to score his fifth goal of the season. The result means that Lyon have incredibly slipped six places to ninth and more importantly, eight points off the pace. Bordeaux on the other hand have opened up a four point gap from second placed Montpellier.
Montpellier established themselves further as challengers for European places this season after a hard fought win in Toulouse cemented their second place position. Souleymane Camara scored early on for Rene Girard’s men to briefly close the gap on the leaders to one point. The in-form Lille continued their impressive form in Le Championnat to move up to third in the table with victory away at Monaco. Les Dogues thrashed Monaco 4-0 at the Stade Louis II, racking up their fourth consecutive victory in Ligue 1 and establishing themselves further as the team to watch at the moment.
Brazilian Tulio De Melo scored a brace either side of half time, which were incidentally the striker’s first goals of the season. The game was put beyond Les Rouge et Blanc when Monaco defender Adriano pulled down Gervinho in the box. The defender was subsequently dismissed for the professional foul and Yohan Cabaye converted the spot-kick. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang completed the scoring late on for the rampant Lille, who have now scored 16 goals in their last four Ligue 1 outings.
Marseille continue to make their slow progress up the table and now sit in fourth place in Ligue 1 following victory over struggling Boulogne. Defenders Gabriel Heinze and Taye Taiwo scored early in the second half to give Les Phoceens victory at the Stade Velodrome. Marseille now find themselves in a healthy position, six points behind leaders Bordeaux with a game in hand. The result coupled with the current league position will surely demonstrate to Didier Deschamps that his side are capable of challenging for the Ligue 1 title this season after coming so close in the previous campaign.
Elsewhere, a top six clash between Auxerre and Lorient ended goalless after a stunning performance from Auxerre stopper Olivier Sorin. PSG produced an explosive first half display to kill off Saint Etienne before half-time at the Parc des Princes, moving the team from the capital into the top half of the table. Sochaux narrowly defeated bottom club Grenoble 1-0 to ease their relegation worries as did Lens with a 2-1 victory over Nice. Valenciennes surprisingly lost away at relegation candidates Le Mans, who this week parted company with their manager. In the final game of the weekend Stade Rennais joined a host of teams on 26 points following an important away victory at Nancy.
