World Cup 2010 profile – Paraguay – Time to deliver on world stage

Paraguay is a very poor country with an astoundingly low life expectancy – only 40% of the population make it past 30. They are the ninth largest country in South America with a population of 7m people – one million of which play football.

Many of Paraguay’s players ply their trade in Mexico (very useful in acclimatising players to high altitudes – vital in South American qualifying), with a few others in Argentina and a smattering across Europe, due largely to the poor quality of their domestic league. Not one player who featured in their last three World Cup qualifiers plied their trade in Paraguay. It’s a league dominated by Club Olimpia and Cerro Porte
