Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Liverpool. Today:

Hodgson in for Figueroa.

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is targeting Wigan left-back Maynor Figueroa to join him at Anfield. Figueroa was the subject of considerable speculation last season after a handful of sturdy performances for the Lancashire-based club and it is thought that Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is also interested in acquiring the services of the Honduran full-back. Hodgson is concerned about the weaknesses of Liverpool’s current rookie left-back Emiliano Insua and is also aware of the fact that the Reds have released veteran Brazilian Fabio Aurelio this summer, meaning there is a need to fill that whole in defence. Figueroa would prove the perfect replacement according to the Daily Mail.

‘Pool enter Cole race.

Meanwhile, The Sun claims that Roy Hodgson is interested in persuading Joe Cole to move to Anfield. The tricky England winger is currently a free-agent and is thought to be tempted by a number of offers from top Premier League clubs, however Hodgson is hopeful that he can persuade Cole to join the Merseysiders. Hodgson will try to sell his energetic vision of the club to the attacking midfielder, in an attempt to put him off a proposed move to Spurs. However, a deal for Cole remains unlikely.

Torres latest.

As for speculation surrounding the future of Fernando Torres, Sky Sports yesterday reported that alleged quotes from the player’s agent about Torres remaining in England but not necessarily at Liverpool were untrue and that the agent hadn’t discussed the Spaniard’s future with anyone. Nevertheless, the Daily Mail claims that Chelsea have made a £40m bid for the striker, which would bring a healthy profit to the club who signed him for around half that price, however it is thought that the Reds will hold out for more.
