Wayne Rooney may sensationally quit Manchester United in the January transfer window. Virtually every paper carries the news this morning though the story was originally broken by the Mirror.
Rooney’s admission last week that there was nothing wrong with the ankle that Sir Alex Ferguson claimed was the reason for his continued absence from the side, was the first public hint of the long-rumoured rift between the United boss and his star player, in the wake of Rooney’s alleged indiscretions in his private life.
Now The Guardian claims Rooney has refused to sign a contract extension which would make him United’s best-paid player, raising his weekly wage from £90,000 to £150,000 per week, and United may feel the need to cash in on him rather than risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires at the end of next season.
