Man Utd news – van der Sar to retire, Rooney drops down rich-list, Fergie expected Blues lead

Every morning A Different League searches the nations press to bring you the latest goings on at Man Utd. Today:

Rooney drops down rich-list.

It certainly hasn’t been the best few months of Wayne Rooney’s life. He’s been injured, off-form and in trouble with the wife, and to top it all of his personal value has dropped by some £12m.

The Football Rich List, a survey commissioned by fourfourtwo.com, looks into the economic value of people in football, and thanks to the severance of commercial contracts following recent allegations about his private life, the Strikers stock has fallen from £37m to £25m.

That puts him behind team-mates Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs whom are estimated to be worth £34m and £27m respectively.

Unsurprisingly the list is headed by Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour, said to be worth a princely £20bn.

Fergie expected Blues lead.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claims he ‘expected’ Chelsea to be in pole position at this stage of the season after an ‘easy’ start to the campaign.

The Reds trail the champions by five points after seven games, and Ferguson reckons that’s due to the opposition the Blues were handed to start proceedings.

In an interview with the clubs official magazine, Inside United, the Scot said, “The position they’re in doesn’t surprise me. Meanwhile, we’ve had tricky trips to Fulham and Everton then played Liverpool at home. Those are difficult matches. Liverpool, Arsenal and ourselves have all played top sides early on. Chelsea’s sterner tests are still to come.”

van der Sar to retire.

According to United Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele, Edwin van der Saar is ready to retire from football at the end of the season.

The Dutch keeper is about to turn 40, but his continued form and fitness means he will be offered a new 12 month contract to stay at Old Trafford. However, Steele believes the former Ajax, Juventus and Fulham stopper has made his own mind up to call it a day.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Steele revealed, “I think Ed has made his mind up and said this is his last year. He is a good pro and a sensible and highly intelligent guy who will know when the time is right.”
