With Wayne Rooney seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford for pastures new, Ryan Keaney takes a look over the up-and-down six years that the striker has enjoyed with Manchester United:

August 2004: Two years after bursting onto the scene with a last-minute winner against Arsenal and a summer of speculation, Manchester United announces that they have signed Wayne Rooney from Everton just hours before the transfer window shuts. The deal is believed to be worth a guaranteed £23m for Everton with many more clauses tied into the deal based on Rooney’s international appearances and future successes. On signing the world’s most expensive teenager, Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I am very excited, I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years. Everyone is delighted by this signing.”
