United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in advanced talks to become manager of Norwegian club side Molde, reports The Guardian.
The former striker, 37, is currently Manchester United’s reserve team manager and has twice turned down the opportunity to manage Molde. However talks have reopened and a deal is believed to be close.
“It’s no secret we have worked intensely to get Ole Gunnar but we have not signed a contract yet,” Molde chairman Erik Berg said last night. “I can’t guarantee a press conference next week but, to put it this way, I will be delighted to welcome you back.”
Police ready for derby.
Greater Manchester Police are to increase patrols for Wednesday’s crunch Manchester derby at Eastlands, according to The Telegraph. There will also be a two-mile alcohol exclusion zone around the stadium.
The Manchester derby has been even more fiery than usual in recent times, with City’s financial ascent to football’s top table giving the matches more importance than during United’s Premier League dominance.
Police confiscated darts and golf balls from fans ahead of the Carling Cup semi-final first leg and warned both clubs not to fan the flames ahead of the second leg, which passed off peacefully.
Supt Jim Liggett, police commanding officer for the game on Wednesday, said: “I don’t think we have had a derby in recent years with both teams almost neck and neck. It’s a high-profile match, but one we are experienced in dealing with.”
Utd keen on McGregor.
Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is the latest name to be linked with the number 1 jersey at Old Trafford.
The Daily Mail reports that United chief scout Martin Ferguson watched the Scotland international in action in Rangers’ Champions League match against Valencia last week.
The 28-year-old keeper made headlines for all the wrong reasons last year due to the part he played in the Boozegate affair, but his performances for club and country this season have earned him plaudits from all corners. His Rangers understudy, Neil Alexander, has recently committed to a new contract, prompting speculation that McGregor could be available for as little as £5m.
United have been linked with an assortment of keepers since rumours began to spread that Edwin Van Der Sar was considering hanging up his gloves at the end of the current season. Anders Lindegaard, Rene Adler, David de Gea, Manuel Neuer and Igor Akinfeev have all been linked with the post between the posts.
