Arsenal’s long-running pursuit of veteran Fulham stopper Mark Schwarzer has finally come to an end after the Australian signed a new deal to end his career at Craven Cottage, according to Yahoo Sport.
The new deal comes amid reports that Arsenal were set to step up their advances to lure the 38-year-old to north London, but Fulham have gained an important victory over the big guns by contracting the former Middlesbrough stopper until 2012.
He said: “I’m delighted to have finally signed a contract extension with Fulham after a great deal of speculation surrounding my future in recent months.”
Gunners line-up Yanbaev.
The First Post is this morning reporting that Russian left-back Renat Yanbaev could soon be on his way to the Emirates.
The 26-year-old, who has been capped seven times at senior level by his native Russia, is thought to have been on Arsene Wenger’s radar for some time, and it appears that with the Arsenal defence recently leaking more goals the Frenchman could make his move in the January transfer window.
And it also appears that he would welcome a move to the Premier League with open arms. The First Post states that he told a Russian rag: “My agent told me there was interest from Arsenal. I’m willing to lose money for a move abroad. I want to play for a European club.”
Nasri injury latest.
Arsene Wenger has moved to ease the fans’ concerns regarding the fitness of fellow Frenchman Samir Nasri, according to Mirror Football.
The 23-year-old picked up a knock to his knee during the Gunners’ Carling Cup quarter-final win over Wigan on Tuesday.
Wenger stated that he expects Nasri to be fit for Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Fulham on Saturday, which will provide a boost considering the club’s position third in the table, two points behind current leaders Manchester United.
The pair face-off on December 13 at Old Trafford, and as a result, Wenger is also unsure as to whether to hand Robin van Persie his second start within a week, or whether to rest the star for the top of the table clash in ten days’ time.
